Curing & Caring For Your Oak Barrel


Before using your barrel, you must cure the barrel. Your oak aging barrel is made of wood and stored empty so your barrel may need to swell back up before use. This is the same concept as a wooden boat being used for the first time after being stored all winter. 

  • Start by rinsing out your barrel three or four times to get any wood debris out. 
  • Now insert the spigot on the front of the barrel and tighten by hand to secure the spigot. 
  • Then fill your barrel full of HOT water keeping it full until any leaking ceases. This may take as little as one minute or as long as a week. Do not insert bung at this time.
  • After 3-4 hours holding water, empty the barrel and let air dry (with the big hole turned down) approximately 4 hours before filling with alcohol.

If you plan on aging different kinds of spirits or wine in the same barrel, you should cure the barrel for three to five days so the wood absorbs as much water as possible and not your alcohol when you start using the barrel.


If you do not plan to use the barrel for a period of time, clean out the barrel and store with water. Be sure to flush the water once a month to keep the barrel clean. This will ensure the barrel does not dry out. 

Your barrel should never be empty!  If you do forget to store your barrel with water, you should try to re-cure the barrel. If the barrel doesn't seal, then it may be time to purchase a new Whiskey Barrel.


Barrels that have been used beyond the curing process, personalized beyond our standard stock engravings, or returned later than 30 days will not be refunded.  Original shipping and return shipping will not be refunded.


Barrels will be replaced under the following circumstances:

  • Barrel's staves or head crack from normal pressure.
  • Barrel will not seal after being properly cured upon initial use. If the barrel has been allowed to dry out after initial use and will not re-seal then manufacture reserves the right to not replace the barrel.
  • Barrel's Spigot leaks beyond normal conditions. Normal conditions include a slight drip after using the spigot to dispense the barrels contents as the spigot will hold a few drops after the spigot has been moved to the closed position. This type of leakage should not be interpreted as a leaky spigot as the spigot would not normally leak if it were left unused.
